A little general goes a long way. He was under a dental general anesthetic. The gas (or vapor rather) is ambient air mixed with nitrous oxide (scientifically called NO). Brand names you may know are most popular Desflurane or Isoflurane. Back when we were kids they mostly used Halothane but it had a stupidly long half-life. Halothane replaced common ether based anesthetic which prior to surgery doctor's would knock you on your ass with a big snoot of common Ether which could be burnt in diesel cars.

In short, he got his lungs filled with Desflurane. Fly little buddy - fly... 8-)
