Midlife High Cholesterol Linked To Alzheimer's Disease And Other Dementia

David Goodhue - AHN Reporter

Washington, DC (AHN) - High cholesterol during midlife significantly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia later in life, according to American and Finish researchers.

To establish their findings, the researchers studied 9,844 men and women for four decades. They said in a statement that those with high cholesterol during midlife - high cholesterol described as 240 or higher milligrams per deciliter of blood - increased their risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later on by 66 percent.

Even those with borderline-high levels, between 200 and 239 mg/dl, had about a 52-percent raised risk of getting vascular dementia when they got older. Vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease. It affects blood supply to the brain.
