Campaigners cry foul as MPs' expenses are published – but heavily redacted

Voters hoping to scrutinise the detail of their MPs' spending woke up to a sea of electronic black ink today as Commons authorities finally published members' expenses claims.

The release of tens of thousands of claim forms – totalling more than a million documents in PDF format – is the result of an historic freedom of information campaign. The claims were posted on the Parliament website at 6am this morning more than a year after the High Court ordered their publication.

But crucial material including such detail as private addresses, names of suppliers and even regular travel schedules has been "redacted" – blocked out in black – to help protect MPs' privacy, even though in many cases the full details have already been published by The Daily Telegraph.
