MW2 Multiplayer thoughts
Ok,been playing for a few hours now and here are some of my thoughts..
Liked
The amount of guns/perks/upgrades you can earn.
The maps are nice and colourful and are in general ,bigger.
The Callsigns/Emblems are a nice touch.
The fact that you can shoot UAV down :)
The expanded killstreaks
The variety in the equipment,Acogs,Thermal, holographic etc
Pro Perks
The general Chaos of everything :)
Disliked
Overpowered, overkill everything has a price and now it seems that it doesnt take real skill to kill anymore, with all the equipment etc,its now turned into a frag fest with less and less skill needed for tactical teamwork.
the next bit of stuff is from another forum user but he has it all spot on and i cant see the point in repeating him as i agree with him and have experienced everything he has said .
The game comes in two DVDs. Many PC systems will not recognize the content on the second one.
You may end up with a game from a batch where the first DVD simply does not read.
You will have to register at Steam and download the release patch and any other missing files -- the download can easily be a multi-hour hassle.
Generally installing is anything but "easy and casual". Troubleshooting can require hours of research and re-installs.
Direct crashes:
You may not be able to get beyond the first screen at all (freeze).
Missing or unreadable text on starting screen and in in-game HUD.

During singleplayer gameplay, the game is likely to inform you that you miss some file, and you can't continue the campaign.
Game may crash at any time during single-player or multi-player play ("iw3mp.exe has stopped working", random freezes, etc. -- game wasn't tested across the board before release).
General limitations:
There is no customer support to help you solve the problems above and below.
The game does not support Sli (two graphics cards).
There is no command console. In particular, you can't change the FoV from the default 65. You may end up with a stretched image depending on your monitor's native resolution. You may also end up seesick from the limited FoV if you sit in the normal distance to your PC screen.
You may not be able to change your in-game resolution and will be stuck with a resolution like 1024x768.
Lean has been taken out of the game (it is a console port, remember).
You can only play the game with one profile (your Steam profile), so you can only have your brother or missus have a go on your own profile.
Multiplayer issues:
Your internet router is likely to prevent you from logging on to the online part of the game at all.
The game doesn't support dedicated servers. This means you can't have favorite servers where you get to know people and can instantly play the game in your preferred mode and with a preferred social atmosphere.
Instead the game uses P2P technology and automated matchmaking. This means that players host the games themselves, far from the internet-highway. The result is a much higher average ping for the players. Watch this video to see the typical lag effect (51 seconds video)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHsWZp5pWCo
The hosting player will have a 0-ping advantage. Meanwhile, you can't see your own precise ping but only a "ping-bar". Expect pings at 100ms and above (100ms is best case).

All but one game-mode are capped at 6 vs. 6 players or lower (one mixed game-mode is 9 vs. 9.)
You are thrown into random maps, and rounds will typically only last around 5 minutes. Then there is a 1-2 minute wait before a new round is loaded.
Frequent pauses during gameplay in case of host-migration, and game may well fail to migrate host at all.
There are no mod tools, so there will be no user-made maps or game-modes. There will be no competitive gaming or realism mods.
Hardcore is limited to only two game-modes, and they are not unlocked before you reach level 21.
There is no /record command (remember, no command console).
Kill streak bonuses are hugely overpowered, destroying any fun if you are still hanging on now.
All games will be un-admined, meaning you can't kick players from the auto-generated matches. This means that cheaters have a free reign (whereas they would be instantly kicked and banned from dedicated servers).

That last point 21 is enough to completely kill the game, apart from the generally horrible IW.net connection quality. As it is, the game will most likely be almost completely deserted in a few weeks time. Since you can only get even remotely acceptable connection speeds if there is a huge player-base, this is a self-reinforcing effect after the first hype is over.
On a more general note, you are warned against purchasing Modern Warfare 2 since it is important to send a message to the gaming industry with the only thing that counts, your wallet. Infinity Ward should be punished for:
1) Repeatedly lying about the PC version ("online same as it ever was", "not a console port", etc. etc.).
2) Completely abandoning the PC community that has helped them get to where they are now.
3) Insulting the PC community while doing so.
Smugness and disrespect should not be rewarded. The customer is always right. The right thing to do here is not buying the game.
Bottom line,Initially you can compared COD4 to MW2 like this,COD4 is Saving Private Ryan/Band Of Brothers,Quite gritty, pseudo realistic. MW2 is Bad Boys 2,Transformers 2 or any Michael Bay film where it's explosions over plot :)
So,will i be playing it in 3 months time, probably not,the strides made in multiplayer are negated by the absolute disaster of IW.net. If you are used to ded servers ,the connection, ping, choice, control then if i must be truthful MW2 is not for you, especially for the long term as you will get frustrated with the lag and the difficulty of playin with people you know who have the game already.
Yes you can play together but it will take time to get everyone together and then you are not guaranteed to stay together.
With Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2 out in March i think/know that will be saying goodbye to MW2 in favour of them, unless IW do the dirty on them and release a dedicated server at the same time as they launch to steal their thunder (which is something i would do if i were IW).
I would love to give this game 8-9/10 but its a 6-7 at most as the problems with p2p connections really set this game back,a really big step backwards.

I'm glad I didn't bother with this one.
Just seems like a money grabbing exercise rather than a game.

Re: MW2 Multiplayer thoughts
Got a PC copy on the cheap Thursday.
My honest impression, I like it.
But it's more for the casual gamer, suits me as I don't get on often these days.
Install went fine, took about twenty minutes. Lucky compared to most I guess.
Played a bit of the single player, same as COD4 so left it and had to take a look at the multi player after the shitstorm from the last few weeks.
I've enjoyed my overall time at it, feels like COD4 in some ways. Some great weapons like the Tavor-21 and the FN SCAR. The bling perk is a nice touch too. Then you have the customizable killstreaks, titles, ect.
I didn't like having no hardcore until level 19, even then it's only TDM and S&D, plus hardcore respawns are on a 15 second loop, slows the game down.
The IWnet service hasn't given me any problems so far. Have had no problems connecting for a game and the actual game play runs smooth. Everyone seems to be on a equal footing.
At the end of the day though, can only give it a 6/10.

Like Outlaw & Snake I got a cheap copy. So I am playing. "Nickname is [SCUM]DeathWish" if you want to find me.
Everything Outlaw has posted is correct "As usual
"
the graphics and colors are nice, but the multiplayer is already full knobs, bunny hoppers, campers and general twats!
That is when you can get a connection & what is this host migration crap that goes on it seems every other map. The whole game freezes, it searches for a new host, then resumes the game. Thats just bullshit!
bring on BC2 & BF43
ps, anyone tried connecting via xfire yet ? is this a way to find ur friends ?

Don't think it works through xfire
Can try a private match sometime, assuming someone will be able to host
Any of us looking to play on the same map will have to add each other through steam, you need either the persons account name or email.
Once your added on Steam, you can invite.

Tried adding you Outlaw, unable to find
Finished the campaign mode, it's brilliant. Although the whole Russia invading the US felt a bit over the top.
Have to say it was an interesting twist when you break out that prisoner from the Russian castle. Especially when you see who it is.

Phil, I'll honestly be playing this as often as I can, really enjoy it. Only thing I can see beating it is Bad Company 2, but thats a while away. It all depends on if everyone else who has a copy will pop on for a few games. Would have to be organised private match though.
At the moment I think the only scummies that have it are Outlaw, DW, Blackout and myself.
Lag that bad Outlaw? I'm on a "4MB" connection but usually only get about 0.4, every game has ran smooth for me, so far...
