New card

Postby [SCUM] FeRoL » 23 Oct 2008, 21:45

Right it's time for a new graphics card to get the last little bit out of my old desktop and its AGP slot!

Currently running a A7600GT 256mb

Thinking on one of these....

Anyone know of a better card/deal?

Sapphire makes an HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP on the cheap that's got a lot of meat to it. The 4670/4650 AGP is out but a tough find. If you can find one get it. For AGP they are much better than nvidia at this point in the game.

The HD 4870 1GB AGP is supposed to be out for the holidays...

Available now:

Diamond, ePower, ATI original (costly), and others are just as good as Sapphire. I just like the half naked bird on the box... or is it the box on the bird. I'm confused now...

In the AGP format, ATI chip cards can't be beat for price and performance right now. Nvidia is focusing on the high-end, console, and laptop market right now. If you're shopping for a high-end PCI-Express graphics card, my answer will be completely different.

Right no where on any reviews/ specs does it say I need a small nucular reactor to power this card! It apparently needs 2 feeds and a PSU that can handle 30A on the 12v rail! FFS

My PSU is rated at 15A for the CPU and I think 11A for the rest, and its a 460w?!

....and the drivers, don't get me started on the drivers!!! aaaaarrrrrrgggggg :'(

if you install only the drivers and not the catalyst driver suite is your only requirement .net 2.0 or higher?

PSUs are cheap m8. you can get a Enemax or Thermaltake 750ish. Total cost with the card and PSU still cheaper than a completely new set up.

Tried 2 diff drivers the one that came on the disk and the most recent one from ATi. Both were no good desktop refresh was almost nil and COD4 wouldn't load.
Theres a hotfix driver from ATi for AGP but apart from that they don't support the cards officially?!
Also I reckon that my PSU is a bespoke size to HP/Compaq making it an even bigger pain in the arse if I need to change it!

Mcphil would it bugger anything up trying to run the card with my existing PSU to try and sort the drivers out?

***WARNING - THIS ADVISE IS OFFERED AS IS IN A STATE OF THEORETICAL ADVISE. I HAVE NOT TESTED YOUR ENVIRONMENT IN MY HANDS SO I CAN MERELY CONJECTURE ON PRIOR SIMILAR KNOWLEDGE. IF YOU DO THE FOLLOWING, YOU WILL DO SO KNOWING THE RISK WILL DESTROY, HARM, AND/OR DAMAGE YOUR VIDEO CARD THUS VIOLATING THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED - RUNNING ANY COMPUTER BELOW POWER VOLT MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS IS EQUALLY AS BAD AS OVERCLOCKING YOUR COMPONENTS. RISK IS BUILT INTO EVERY COMPUTER. YOU ARE CONTINUING AT YOUR OWN RISK***

Now that being said, it shouldn't bother the card HOWEVER your video may freeze, you might BSOD, the computer might just shutdown. The card should boot up under your current power supply but once you start running an application that would stress the video card, as you know the card will pull more power from the psu and and once you run out of juice, you'll starve another piece of hardware in the circuit chain like your hard drive, motherboard and/or cpu and down the computer goes. Damage may end up as a result of this type of power failure.
