PC vs Console..is the PC Games Market slowing down ?
Just a question as McPhil and i have been having this Discussion on and off for a few weeks now.
My argument is that The Old pc developers are now turning to the consoles when it comes to the lead machine to develop on and porting to the pc if its feasible.
My personal thoughts are that unless they radically bring prices down, they are gonna lose a huge share of the market.
"Consoles don't threaten PC gaming" ..a story by the boss of Nvidia...
NVIDIA boss Roy Taylor believes the value of consoles means no-one will make PC-exclusive games any more.
Speaking exclusively to Eurogamer, he said he wasn't threatened by the machines from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo; instead he sees an "exciting future" of co-existence.
"I think we have to face the facts - the value of consoles is such that no-one is going to make a PC-exclusive game in the future. Why would they? Why would they ignore consoles?" said Taylor.
"That said, PC gaming is changing - and consoles don't threaten PC gaming. They're just different. Adapting to that and understanding that is what I think is really, really important.
"Most PC gamers also own consoles - not all of them, but a lot of them. What we're seeing happen is that, yes, people are developing for Xbox 360, for PS3 - but they're also developing for PC," he added.
The reason Taylor is excited is that PC versions of games, which he says are generally "better", use console code as a baseline, and the better the baseline then the better the desktop conversion.
"The console is now a baseline. If you look at Gears of War or Assassin's Creed, they came out on console and they were great experiences - but the PC versions had additional aspects to them that also made them attractive, whether you owned the console version or not," continued Taylor.
"The PC version was better. That's something that people need to get their heads around - the console is a baseline, the PC is going to be an improved version. That's an exciting future, and that's why I don't see anything threatening about console at all.
Head over to our interview with NVIDIA boss Roy Taylor to see what he has to say about the future of graphics, why integrated solutions are ruining everything, and how the PC installed-base means it will never disappear as a gaming platform.

Anyway,Discuus...has the PC got a future as a gaming platform ?

I know that i would never be able to use a console for FPS's i just find it quite an alien concept after gaming on the pc for over 5 years, i tried playing COD4 on the PS3 and i was like a total N()()B!
but im happy with just the COD series for the pc, wouldnt bother me too much if they stopped other games, just leave me with my COD lol
IMO, nothing beats the PC for FPS's and never will - FACT!!

Agreed, PC will slow down but it will never die. There will always be a demand from PC gamers and they will still make games for those people

As long as the price of PC's keeps falling they'll be fine IMO. One of the definate advantages of consoles is their price.
A PC is a lot more than a console but for the same cash you could buy a laptop and a console for the same as a decent spec gaming PC.

Re: PC vs Console..is the PC Games Market slowing down ?
I think the PC gamer and the console gamer to different personality types. I doubt I'll ever buy a console. Playing COD4 on my mate's PS3, the game was not as dynamic, missing a lot of options (fewer configuration details)... The gaming format seemed not as complex. The video graphic quality is just so much better on my gaming rig. The audio on my X-Fi card is over the top and on his console he had digital speakers but the sound just wasn't as rich and full. With my X-Fi card and surround sound 5.1 headset, I can hear people and what direction they are coming from... That's quality gaming.
I guess I haven't had a good experience on a console as I'd rather put the coin to buy the console into an upgrade part into my gaming rig. I can modify and trickout my PC just like my car. That's cool and I like it. I just can't do that with a console.
Balancing that, I can understand why game producers are putting more focus into the console market but I think the PC gaming industry is a billion USD industry and the manufacturers of gaming type kit and hardware just aren't going to let that go unanswered.
With Atari's new "unhackable" exe wrapper technology and similar wrappers coming to market, it'll be very interesting to see where game devs are in October and November. Cool to think about.

Re: PC vs Console..is the PC Games Market slowing down ?
Thought id stick a post on here since the ps3 was mentioned.
Ive been online gaming on the pc for about 9 almost 10 years now and recently in the last year have been into console gaming....i didnt think i would ever be playing online with a console because i actually hated the idea myself.
To be honest there are 3 reasons why i love console gaming now.....its easy, you dont have all the pissing about like you do on the pc when a game comes out..will it run, wont it run? etc
Also i dont have to upgrade my system hardware every week just to play a new game because a new graphics card has come out.
And finally i dont find myself getting as addicted to it as i do the pc...which for me is a good reason because i found that my addiction to pc gaming and the community around it was effecting my work lol
he one thing i will say about the console is just that, you dont get the community...which is also a bad thing.

Carmack: PCs not as important as consoles
ID Software's John Carmack has put out a thought that that the PC platform is not as important as the consoles. He notes that that PC sales numbers are just what they used to be in terms of games and also the PC is more like the junior partner in ID's cross platform strategy.
quote:
As primarily a developer on the PC, few know the shifts in the industry as well as id Software. Constantly are doom-and-gloom reports about how the PC is falling to the wayside of consoles, some even blaming piracy. Carmack isn’t so convinced: “Well, it’s hard to second guess exactly what the reasons are. You can say piracy. You can say user migration. But the ground truth is just that the sales numbers on the PC are not what they used to be and are not what they are on the consoles.”
Never is the shift from PC to console more abundantly clear than when Carmack asserts, “We still think the PC is a market worth supporting, but we’re not making decision around the PC. It’s probably more of the junior partner in the cross-platform strategy, although obviously, our day-to-day development is predominately on the PC.”
