Anyone used this? Just installed and f***ing wow! I have never used linux before and I can't believe how quick it is! The desktop is sweet and the effects are really good.

McPhil I know you are a great fan of linux. What version do you use?

Are you dual-booting or is it installed on a differnet PC/Laptop/MAC?

Ubuntu is a branch of Debian. Debian linux shell cmds are different from what I'm used to. I personally prefer Red Hat branches of Linux. CentOS is a powerful, free, GNU option for linux heads wanting to learn or maintain their Red Hat cmd terminology. Binaries between Ubuntu and CentOS are quite different as well.

Ubuntu is very powerful but understand that the commands you type in the shell prompt will be different than commands you type in a shell prompt on Red Hat branches, again, such as CentOS.

Understanding the linux type histories is probably a good place to start. Hit the Wiki pages and read up on Ubuntu a bit. It was developed off an early branch of Debian somewhere in Africa I believe. Sort of a cool history.

Anyway, long story short, in summary, I prefer Red hat/CentOS, but Ubuntu is a great option, just understand there are differences in commands and security.

You can load Linux on any old computer. That's the nice thing about linux too. You don't have to have a cutting edge environment to run the Linux OS.

I tried to run Linux on an old VIA processor PC and it even ran Linux. I couldn't use the onboard graphics chip. I had to put in a PCI video card, but after that it ran just fine for what I needed.

If you have a Mac and are running Tiger or Leopard, you actually can boot your Mac on Linux which is inbuilt into the OS. Just FYI...

dual boot from my desktop pc.

Ubuntu is great. You can install it via windows and it will sort the dual boot for you! Just download, mount with daemon tools and install! No need to partition either.

I tried debian a while back but could never figure out how to install the desktop so I gave up!

Next step is to install on my laptop!

I am converted!

Decided to jump straight in Herbs and I love it :D Thanks for the "push" I needed to try a Linux OS :P The install was stupidly easy. Now all I need is a Linux AV program ;)

Ubuntu is Zulu for "humanity to others." Its owned by some South African guy but its based out of the UK I think. I like the business model (not some commie free love rubbish) as they keep themselves afloat by providing tech support etc.

According to wikipedia the theoretical cost of developing Debian is estimated to be close to US$13,000,000,000 8|

funny as I found it while watching you tube!

I now have it on my laptop and love it!

Leroy, I don't know if you know but to enable access to the eye candy do the following:

First install your updates.
Then install/activate your graphics drivers by going System, Administration, Hardware drivers.
Reboot
System, Administration, Synaptic Package manager.
In the quick search box, type "compizconfig-settings-manager "
Install from there.
Reboot and play with settings in :

System, Prefs, Compiz Settings manager

Thats cut straight from you tube comment. It works and you can do things like this:

or type ubuntu beryl into youtube!

Also do all the major updates via system/administrator/update manager but I am sure you would know that.

Ha thanks Herbs - some of the stuff is crazy - though my crappy GPU doesn't particularly like the extra trouble :P The default effects are pretty enough compared to my settings on WinXP.

Only complaint atm I have with Ubuntu is a slight graphical glitch when hovering over minimize/maximize/close in the top bar when its unselected - it goes white or a part of it is missing.

lol, after typing that I remembered you are not into all the eye candy stuff!

Tbh Leroy I only have a radeon 2400hd card and Ubuntu runs sweet with all the effects running. My laptop is a bit slow but it only has 512mb ram.

If you need an antivirus try avast, they have a free Linux version.

Love it!

Even the standard "magic" setting is pretty crazy (wobbly windows etc. 8| ) Nothing is as bad as my FX5200 Herbs :P

Still reading up on the security aspect of Linux/Ubuntu and trying to debunk some myths/preconceptions I have about it

Its just awesome though
