Re: Call of Duty:Black Ops

Postby [SCUM] OUTLAW » 02 Sep 2010, 12:49

It's a safe bet that Call of Duty: Black Ops will become the de facto multiplayer shooter of the fall, deservedly so for the intelligent, exciting online features that developer Treyarch is adding to the series—most notably, gambling.

Of the hours' worth of Call of Duty: Black Ops that I played at Activision's multiplayer preview event in Los Angeles tonight, it was the newly revealed Wager Matches that packed the most punch. Nothing of substance was on the line as I was gambling with other people's "money" in the form CoD Points. (CP is the stuff players will use to buy new weapons, perks, killstreaks, etc. and is different from the Experience Points, or XP, acquired while playing multiplayer.)

The meat and potatoes modes—the frenzied Capture the Flag, the destructive Search and Destroy, Team Deathmatch—were intact, a delight to play, but familiar. Capturing enemy flags and defending the one guarded by my team of strangers on a map dubbed "Slaughter House" was as adrenaline filled and chaotic as ever. Capture the Flag, a staple, plays almost exactly as it did in the most recent Call of Duty. Perfectly fine.

Those now expected modes were spiced up by some of Black Ops' new killstreaks, like the RC-XD remote control explosive car which brings pint-sized but deadly driving to Call of Duty multiplayer. Players can also drop a SAM Turret onto the playfield that will target aircraft like the killstreak-called Attack Chopper. The vicious Attack Dogs of Call of Duty: World At War return in Black Ops, one of the late killstreaks that can help root out campers. Mortar Team was an interesting addition. Acquiring that killstreak lets the player paint three targets onto the map with mortar fire raining down on the map. It's similar to World At War's Artillery Strike.

The Care Package killstreak can, in addition to dropping other killstreaks, provide players with rare weapons, like a mini-gun and rocket launcher. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try those rare weapons on for size.

Black Ops appears to nail the obligatory online competitive aspects of a Call of Duty game, but Treyarch has something new and exciting to complement the multiplayer suite.
You Want Some Of This Action?

Wager Matches are wildly different custom game types. Comprised of four distinct free-for-all game types—One In The Chamber, Sharpshooter, Sticks and Stones, and Gun Game—players will ante up in a matchmaking lobby, wagering a set amount of the CoD Points they've accumulated by playing this and other multiplayer modes.

The most nail-biting of those four Wager Match types, from my experience, was Gun Game. The rules are simple. Each player starts with the lowest tier weapon, a revolver. Each time a player scores a kill, he'll upgrade to the next weapon.

There are 20 tiers of weapon in Gun Game, so players will advance from pistol to dual wielding pistols to shotguns to semi-automatic machine guns to assault rifles to grenade launchers... and beyond. While the power of those weapons tends to increase from tier to tier, the transition from tier to tier can be jarring, resetting the player's expectations of what his weapon is capable of.

The tension of Gun Game increases sharply as players reach the final two tiers—the explosive crossbow and the ballistic knife. Those are two weapons that carry very limited ammo and slow reload times, leaving the player extremely vulnerable at top weapon tiers—and that's right around the time when other players are armed with assault rifles and "Thumper"-like grenade launchers.

The other twist in Gun Game is that suffering knife kills drops players down a tier, a most painful regression.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Multiplayer Hands-On: Always Bet On Black

As much as I adored Gun Game, no Wager Match type managed to disappoint.

Sticks and Stones was enjoyable for different reasons. Players are armed only with an explosive crossbow, ballistic knife and one tomahawk. Kills with the crossbow and knife will accumulate in-game wealth. A successful hit with the tomahawk—a thrown blade that requires expert accuracy—will bankrupt its victim.

The weapon selection in Sticks and Stones leaves each player with minimal ammunition. Players must choose their shots carefully, for reloading or recovering one's tomahawk is slow, leaving a player vulnerable to attack. Sticks and Stones sometimes takes a turn for the comical as players engage in a deadly dance that slowly plays out as opponents square off, taking single shots, reloading in unison, firing again, missing again, reloading. It's as if it will ultimately devolve into each opponent throwing their crossbows at each other, then their boots, then settling the contest with a fist fight.

Sharpshooter was another great equalizer. There is no weapon imbalance here. Every player in Sharpshooter is using the same type of gun at the same time. Players will start with a choice from the game's massive arsenal then switch to the next randomly chosen weapon. You may be playing with a shotgun at one point, then cycle to dual-wielded SMGs the next, a missile launcher 30 seconds later.

The only differentiating factor in Sharpshooter are perks that players acquire with each kill. Skill and familiarity with Call of Duty: Black Ops' broad range of weapons will be key to seeing success in Sharpshooter.

And while One In The Chamber, a Wager Match game type that grants each competitor three lives but just one bullet, was fun to play, it was my least favorite of the quartet. Players can acquire additional bullets by killing their opponents, so you'll need to be accurate with a pistol or skilled with a knife. One In The Chamber can lead to some tense hand-to-hand combat moments, but it was too lacking in variety, less panic-filled than Gun Game to make the top of my list.

However, I spoke to other Black Ops players who felt the opposite, that One In The Chamber managed to stand out at the strongest Wager Match type.
Location, Location, Location

During my hands-on time with Call of Duty: Black Ops, I played on only a handful of maps. "Summit" is built on a snowy, flurry-filled Russian base. There's a large, covered command center at its core, with pathways that run along the map's border and a handful of small sheds in which to take shelter. Otherwise, it's very open in its design.

"Radiation" was my favorite of the lot. It's full of nooks and crannies in which to explore (or camp), dark passageways in which to sneak and hide. There's a large open area in the center, flanked by platforms that offer high ground and a great view of the map. There's also an underground pathway in Radiation that can be accessed by doors. Players can choose to open or close those doors via a switch on a raised platform.

"Launch" is a tight, close quarters map set on a missile platform. I played both Radiation and Launch in Gun Game mode, with the latter providing a much zippier experience, thanks to the tight proximity of players. At certain intervals, one of the massive missiles will blast off, violently rocking the playfield. Players can initiate these rocket launches themselves, perhaps to disorient the competition.

I also played a few Capture the Flag rounds on "Slaughter House," a decimated urban area of Vietnam built from blown apart buildings and mini-mountains of rubble. Slaughter House is filled with pathways to explore, alleyways and buildings interweaving for a map that's stuffed with avenues to sprint through. The map flows splendidly.

Final Thoughts

Treyarch appears to be on its way to delivering an impressive follow up to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a multiplayer experience that builds smartly upon that seminal shooter. Players' expectations for a rock solid multiplayer component in Black Ops should be well met, with Wager Matches providing a surprising variation on the robust suite of familiar game types. It would be nice to see Wager Matches extend to more game types, including team-based play and standard deathmatch game types. But Call of Duty: Black Ops' multiplayer is, without a doubt, very promising.

Actually it is quite hard, as I dont know how many of you will be getting black ops or if you go the medal of honor route, where as I know pretty much everyone on my friends list will be getting them, if push comes to shove and if I have lots of spare cash at the time I might just get it for both platforms :D

I think i'll be getting both anyway...but a little bit of news regarding servers...

"Feeding us the information, straight from the event was planetcallofduty.com’s Josh Peckler. Josh hob-nobbed with PC lead, Cesar Stastny (pcdev) and gained first-hand information.

To help us carve up that info, is New Zealand’s great shoutcaster and competitive PC caster from on3network.co.nz: Craig, aka Arseynimz.

What did we learn? Dedicated servers, sure. But you will only get them from Gameservers.com. Also, there will not be any public server files. Public files would allow you to run the game from your own server, you will have to rent them from Gameservers exclusively it seems. But ranked or unranked servers will be available from this (trusted GSP) provider. In other words, you as the admin will have access to your server and you will be able to configure the server or mod it.

The game will be distributed exclusively through Steam and that means VAC - not Punk Buster. VAC does not have the same anti-cheat savvy that PB has, so we will need to monitor the resilience of VAC to counter the hackers out there. "

MW2 Has changed the face of Multiplayer gaming on the pc for the worse...no more free maps,no more constant PB updates.....it's like losing £50 and finding a £10 :)

Anyway,as we have to rent our server from gameservers i had a look at the prices and for 3 months its $42 which isnt bad but remember we had a dedicated from MP for £135 for the same amount of time but with that we could run any games we wanted and a MOH server would cost us £50 per 3 months but that is swappable with BC2 but its something we'll have to look into nearer the time and funds permitting.

Re: Call of Duty:Black Ops

After Call of Duty: World at War, we set out 3 goals for our next PC title:

* 1] PC gets every single game feature that the consoles get, but in a way that makes sense for PC.
* 2] PC gets even more features – the ones that PC gamers want like dedicated servers and more customization.
* 3] Keep it fun. Protect the integrity of the title through design and post-launch support.

Keep that in mind as you read through the decisions outlined below in our FAQ.

Call of Duty: Black Ops PC Multiplayer FAQ

Full feature support: Confirmed
Ranked Servers: earn XP and currency. Wager Servers: gamble your currency. Customizable Unranked Servers. Combat Training against practice dummies. Theater. Create-a-Class "2.0." Contracts. Emblem editor. Everything the consoles get. Implemented in a way that makes sense for PC (*cough* no lobbies *cough*).

PC Features: Confirmed
Dedicated Servers. New Server Browser. Dev console. /record. Customizable game modes, perks, killstreaks, classes, and higher player counts on unranked servers. Map rotation. RCon. Kick & Ban. MOTD. In-game custom Server Banners. And more.

Mod Tools: Confirmed
We will release mod tools sometime post-launch. We need to finish the game first. Then we will make sure any urgent issues are handled. Then we will begin work on tools. The extent of the mod tools package will not be known until this time.

Global Persistent Stats, Profiles: Confirmed
Your profile data is stored on servers for you and is accessible from anywhere on the internet. Stats, XP, COD Points, configs, etc.

Leaderboards: Confirmed
Yes, leaderboards - globally persistent leaderboards (i.e. NOT per-server based).

Steam Exclusive: Confirmed
Millions of Call of Duty fans are already on Steam. Their Friends are on Steam. Steam will provide the ease of auto-updating instead of manual patching. Auto-updating will also help keep the community playing together on the latest version. The Steam cloud will make your profile and configs available to you on any computer.

VAC: Confirmed
We are serious about protecting the integrity of this game from hackers and cheaters who would otherwise ruin the fun for the honest players. Used in conjunction with our own anti-exploit measures, Theater reviews, trusted servers, and supplemented by server admins with kick and ban powers we believe that Valve Anti-Cheat will be an effective solution for Call of Duty: Black Ops PC. We are committed to working closely and diligently with Valve to deal with new threats as they appear.

No “Public Server Files”: Confirmed
Many of these game features are predicated on having a trusted host or server. Otherwise these features would be wide-open to easy exploits and rampant cheating. Also, anti-cheat solutions can be significantly more effective on games that rely on trusted servers. We chose against “public server files” in favor of providing full feature support and protecting the integrity of this title. This doesn't mean you won't have customization or admin capabilities with your servers - because you will. This simply means we've partnered with an exclusive server provider.

GameServers.com Exclusive: Confirmed
We have partnered with GameServers.com as the exclusive provider of dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops. Every dedicated server for this title will be running on top quality hardware and infrastructure with excellent bandwidth. There will be a ton of official servers at launch for everyone to play on for free. If you want to run your own server you will be able to rent one at a great price (which will never go higher than $0.99/slot). They are actively adding new server locations and staffing up to meet global demand. If you don’t see your location you can suggest it here: http://www.gameservers.com/blackops/

Max Players: Not Confirmed
We have not yet finalized the maximum number of players in ranked or unranked servers. More playtesting is required to determine how high these numbers can go. This happens as late as possible in the project otherwise the game is likely to change in ways that could invalidate the results.

Minimum System Requirements: Not Confirmed
The game is still in development, and the PC team is hard at work making further optimizations. We will announce the min specs in the near future.

-----

Hopefully that answers the majority of the outstanding questions not answered from our MP Reveal coverage. There are still some questions we do not have answers for at this time, so as always, we appreciate your patience. We will have all questions answered before November 9th.

Regards,
-JD, PC Dev, & the PC Team

Also i am not sure how the wager matches are gonna be hosted i hope that they dont use the P2P stuff as then the host will always have advantage ,if not then they have to use a separate server which will mean that if we want one thats another server to rent :(

For a server from Gameservers.com it works out about £11 per month for an 18 slot server(which atm is the max).

http://www.gameservers.com/blackops/

Sounds do-able.

if we want to run a moh server as well then then that works out at £15 from them

Call Of Duty Black Ops Multiplayer Reveal Event

While wandering around from station to station watching the community get their hands dirty with some Black Ops multiplayer, I ran into an old friend. Perhaps you have heard of him, Mark Lamia? He pulled me aside and asked, so what do you think? I simply stood there and stared at him with my mouth open, I simply could not muster any words to explain how I felt about Black Ops. So many words and emotions flooded my mind as I went over everything we had learned and seen that day. I finally was able to say that I was speechless, I literally could not find words at the time to express my happiness and relief. Happiness that the game played so well and to see all the new additions. The relief mainly based on the principle that they have taken the best from WaW and MW2 and combined it with new features to construct a solid multiplayer.

I have never been much of a free-for-all player, however after witnessing their new game modes, “Wager Matches” I will have to change that. These new wager modes were awesome. One thing I really liked was how you don’t choose any weapons, perks or create any classes. Everything is preset for each mode. This preset business is great and will be popular with the hardcore gamers. The wager matches are built around the skill of the player and not how good said player has set up their classes. This levels the playing field and allows for some serious fun. I was only able to play three of the four available Wager Matches, so I will talk a little about those three. Gun game, the mode where each kill you get progresses you to a different weapon was awesome. This mode is nice because it really challenges the players and tests their skills with all kinds of weapons instead of allowing that player to use their “favorite” or “best” weapon. The concept where you can knife someone to send them back a tier was a great addition. It is very fun to run around and only knife, this REALLY makes people mad. You definitely need to keep getting kills to keep up with the other players or you will be left behind with only the pistol while everyone else is already multiple tiers above you. Sticks and stones was another wager mode I really enjoyed, where you have the crossbow, ballistic knife and the tomahawk. I liked this one because it has three fairly difficult weapons to maneuver. This mode was just awesome because it has 3 weapons that I had never used before, so it was a totally awesome new experience. You have to be careful because if you get killed with the tomahawk you will become bankrupt and set to last place. The final match I got to play was one in the chamber. Now this was definitely my favorite. It really reminded me of playing bolt actions in World At War, where your aim really had to be on, you had to get that perfect shot to kill the enemy player. This is the one match that got my adrenaline going more than the others. I remember one of the matches I played, I was down to my last of three lives and it was me and one other player. I managed to find a great building with blown out walls that looked down across the street. I had no idea it was down to two, all I knew was that I wanted to win. So I am sitting up there looking around frantically, watching my back and then I saw the last player running across the street. I had my sights on them for a while aiming up the shot, as I only had one chance to make it. They were pretty far away and were about to turn left behind a car, and I aimed it up and shot. Got the kill and the win. It was probably the most epic and satisfying shot and kill cam I have ever managed to pull off, especially when everyone was watching and got to see my skills. This is a wager match that I will be betting on a lot.

Yes I just said betting. One of the concepts of wager matches is that it deals with CoD Points (CP). A new form of currency new to Call Of Duty. In terms of wager matches, what you do is bet your CP that you will place in the top three of six players. You can also double down and raise the stakes. This is what you are playing for, CP and bragging rights. CP is a brilliant addition, as it revolutionizes the way you will be creating your loadouts. As I understand it, you rank up and unlock different guns, attachments, camos, etc and as you unlock those you use your CP to purchase them. Now you can make the class you want when you want, granted you have enough CP and it has been unlocked. I have been asked on numerous occasions to describe Black Ops MP in one word. That one word is customization. It really tells you something when they remove the gore from MP to allow for the in-depth customization they have made available in Black Ops. I mean the level of customization is simply incredible, and well worth the removal of gibs and what not in multiplayer. I suppose I will start with the gun itself. You are now able to customize your gun the way you want it to look. You now have the chance to make your gun, YOUR gun. Make the one gun to rule them all. That one gun that your opponents see over and over again in their kill cams and theater mode. Your gun. See you can add your emblem, clan tag, camo, red dot/reflex sights, and a plethora of attachments. Lets start with attachments. From the time I spent muddling around in the create-a-class section I notice that there are a ton of new attachments for weapons. One notable new attachment is the flamethrower. Now people continue to ask me if this is overpowered, however in my opinion it is underpowered if anything. You get three canisters of fuel, with approximately four seconds of “flame time.” Now I did equip this and tried to get some kills around corners, but I found it was simply more effective to just use the gun. Now for me, this attachment will be one used for fun, rather then my normal gameplay loadout I use when I play to win. It looks great, and everything about it is smooth, however I just can’t see myself using it all the time. Now onto emblems. This was one feature that really intrigued me. They have about twelve pages full of different numbers and pictures for your emblem. Now that alone is pretty cool. They are all solid color, so nothing too fancy at a first glance. However when you start to get into it you have twelve layers. So being able to have twelve emblem layers with numerous color choices and the ability to rotate, resize, etc turns emblem creation into an art form. Now one could spend hours and hours creating an epic emblem. My hope is to never see two emblems alike. There are endless possibilities and something that I think everyone will be excited for. Your clan tag may not be as customizable as your emblem however you can choose it’s color along with the option to slap it on your gun. Now this is just epic. Tthese features really make your gun your own in a way that makes you proud of your gun, of your masterpiece you have created. The camo selection is also something Treyarch has improved from previous titles. We were able to get our hands on a dozen or so while playing at the event. Now you no longer have to struggle with headshots to unlock the sweet camos. Now all you need to do is reach rank 10 to unlock the camos and then you have your choice of beautiful gun skins, CoD Points permitted. I am sure you have seen the list, but here are some of the camos that were shown.

* Dusty
* Ice
* Red
* Olive
* Nevada
* Sahara
* ERDL
* Tiger
* Berlin
* Warsaw
