Speedy's network problem

Postby [SCUM] Speedy » 27 Sep 2009, 17:03

Ok basically my network is fucked and I've no idea what is wrong. I can connect to the internet with my mum's laptop but not my PC. First of all on the router (belkin) it says "not connected" so naturally I reset the modem and router. Nope, still no connection. Then I try and bypass the router and it still doesn't work! I tried ipconfig /release and /renew but it can't renew the ip because it can't connect with the DHCP.

However strangely enough I can connect fine first time on this laptop although it still will not work through the router (obviously because that has the same problem as my PC). I've checked all the cables, they must be working because this laptop can use them fine to connect to the internet. Virgin tech support said that there was no problem their end after doing their checks and stuff. And I'd tend to believe that as I CAN connect, just not on my PC and the router.

Both stopped working at the same time so I'm out of ideas. Please help, I need internets.

Restore the default settings of your router either by holding the reset button down on the back panel of the router with a paper-clip or there should be a reset factory settings in the firmware of the router's GUI.

You've changed a setting, maybe DMoZ or parental filter or something. Rather than spending an hour trying to sort it just reset to default. Once you can connect to the interwebs, check Belkin's website for the latest firmware for your router's model number.

If you have special settings for port forwarding be sure to write those down on a paper so you don't forget them as reseting to factory defaults will overwrite everything.

Ok I'll have a go but this doesn't explain why my PC won't connect when plugged directly into my modem.

Router will not connect even with factory settings. I even tried manually setting DNS to try and get some responce (194.168.4.100/194.168.8.100) but nothing. I don't think this is a router issue as 2 pieces of hardware cannot connect. It just doesn't make any sence that this one can though!

Sorted now. Turned out the router power converter was giving irregular voltages, corrupting any network traffic. This must have somehow messed up the modem which I unplugged for 10 minutes. Plugged it all back in with new power converter and it works fine

Ah ok fair enough. I'd like to publically thank Jesus for helping me through this. I don't think that without him, I could have done this.
