Re: Spore PC
Ugh..
I wanted this game badly. Since it's inception, I was amazed by the theory behind it, the scale, the customisation - all plus marks for me.
So what went wrong? Every press release seemed to add more and more minuses, but I still went ahead and got the game: surely this was just the usual anti-hype backlash?
Well, what can I say? A REAL disappointment. I've never felt so underwhelmed by a game. I love stuff like CIV, and used to be a great fan of the SimCity games (4 aside).. the sense of scale and possibilities have been completely removed from this game.. it feels as if nothing you do actually affects the outcome. No inter-species mating, no diversity between members of the same race (army of clones, so no genetic traits etc.) and why must I stop evolving after the second part of the game?
I could talk about the underlying problems with the mechanics all day - they do work, but are so inconsequential that I am left thinking that half the game was axed half way through. Each stage is sooooo short (bar the last one) that, if I didn't know any better, I'd have assumed they were tagged on at the last minute to bulk up play-time.
Yes, you can customise to high heaven, but in the end, it all has very little consequence on your progression. Once you've licked how to make an animal that can defend itself in the first stage, and one that can attack in the second you can complete these stages very quickly - and you will want to, because they are TEDIOUS.
Perhaps I expected too much - but it was the designer himself who sold this game to me as an 'evolution' simulator of sorts. It isn't that, it isn't even 'The Sims'. With the ability to sand-box and experiment completely nerfed down this game simply feels like an exercise in marketing rather than the ground-breaking title it was billed as all those years ago.
Even without the 'problematic' DRM issues and account restrictions, I'd give this game something around 5/10. Your best bet is to go to a friends house and play, decide for yourself then purchase if you like the game.

The reason for the backlash is because of DRM and the way EA are using it. Have a read here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/co ... 00885.html
The DRM that comes with the official game only allows customers to use it on three machines (after that you have to call EA for permission to activate the game on additional machines)

Re: Spore PC
Read the rest of the post - I do mention it.
I avoided talking about it specifically, because it's not to do with the game per se, but with the overall product. I'm happy to discuss DRM in full, but I think it's an issue that deserves its own thread... Really disgusting.

Re: Spore PC
sorry, didn't read that bit.
I would imaging they will start using this for all their future games at some point which is a real shame. Will have to wait and see I guess.

Re: Spore PC
download the no cd patch from all good e-tailers,dont seem to have the problem,i did and but i only played it to the 2nd stage then got bored with it,i think the longevity is supposed to be in the creator and at the moment i am having more fun with that than the game itself.
Just trying to make a bi-ped now which looks like the predator !!

The latest Zero Punctuation hits the nail on the head - pretty much exactly the same sentiments as me. Check it out (token warning, strong language).
