VGA and DVI question

Postby [SCUM] Speedy » 26 Mar 2008, 01:25

Ok, so I have a DVI graphics card (ATI x1800xt) and a DVI socket on my LCD monitor. However I use a VGA adaptor on the graphics card and connect the cable to the VGA socket on my monitor. Am I missing out on some mega quality picture by not using DVI?

Yes. You need to find out if your monitor will handle a DVI-D cable or DVI-I cable. Your video card can handle either. Plus your resolution is higher with a digital cable.

You're the fourth person this week who has asked this question. Seems like people are just using what they have. Quit being cheap! :P

Cheap is my middle name. Need to look at the box to find out my monitor name. McPhil - how much should I spend on a new cable?

DVI-D - Cheap
DVI-I - Bit more

If you have a nice TFT-LCD, verify the compatibility of the cable first. Once you know whether it's DVI-D or DVI-I, then drop about 15 to 20 quid into a nice 1 meter cable (0.5 meter are available but difficult to move your computer around with a short cable but I'm sure you're used to that - ZING! :P )

tbh speedy you are not missing much. Its better quality but not that much. I think it only really notices on large screens.

I have tried analog and digital on my 19" lcd and hardly notice the difference apart from its a bit sharper.

If you buy a cheap DVI cable you'll have a cheap picture. I bought a SonicWave by Impact Acoustic DVI cable and about pissed my trouser at the difference on my Samsung SyncMaster 940B.

Found a cable in my monitor box. Doesn't look too cheap (silver plated by the looks of it, same as my vga). Haven't noticed that much difference yet. We'll see next time I play COD4 ;)
