Detail

Doom 3 is a science fiction horror video game developed by id Software and published by Activision. An example of the first-person shooter genre, Doom 3 was first released for Microsoft Windows on August 3, 2004.  The game was later adapted for Linux, as well as being ported by Aspyr Media for Mac OS X. Developer Vicarious Visions ported the game to the Xbox console, releasing it on April 3, 2005. British developers Splash Damage also assisted in design for the multiplayer elements of the game.

The 3rd in the series to the original favourite FPS game

So I came accross a copy of this by chance for absolutly nothing at some ASUS promotion stand. And if I'm perfectly honest I am glad I didn't spend 20-odd quid on this. Ok maybe my standards seem a bit high but completing this game in 10 hours kinda made me crave something else.

First impressions were awesome - the graphics were pristine and I could tell someone had spent some time on these models. The story was pretty average, typical overal goal and lots of mini goals on the way. The game was pretty easy to navigate which was nice, I often find myself getting frustrated in other games when I'm not exactly sure where I'm meant to go

There were plenty of hidden goodies along the way, picking up massacred employee's PDAs often allowed you to find things in locked cabinets/rooms etc. The game in general was based on the typical DOOM style, finding keys for doors, random opening shafts with aliens inside and a whole array of multicoloured monsters, zombies and hellspawn to mame and destroy with your weapons.

On the subject of weapons, I found the trusty shotgun a little too weak, and the favourite chainsaw a bit useless unless it was a room full of zombies. Also the game's big boy gun called the "BFG" came in too late in the game. Reading through FAQs I've found it was locked up in a room much earlier in the game than when you get hold of it normally in story mode. I wanted more time to blow things away with this thingbut alas, the game ended just too soon.

I found the game became repeatative and rather annoying in places. By the 10th time the same imp has jumped out at you from behind a door you really begin to stop finding it exciting. The same textures are used throughout the game, apart from the point when you end up in hell. Although this may be realistic in a space-station sense, I think this is just slightly lazy.

But enough of this negativity! In places the game has some freaky perception tricks that leave you feeling a little dizzy. The story overall has some exiting and moody bits, but it could have been better.

It's not bad, but it's not jaw-dropping either. This game left me wanting something else that deffinatly was not DOOM 3.

Verdict

Overall If I were you, I'd wait till this game is on ebay for £8.99. And go buy F. E. A. R. instead.

Not bad, but not jaw-dropping either.
